Tomorrow, we will find out if the GLI can be resurrected, or I will be going to find a new car. The thing is, even if the GLI is fixed, we’re thinking of selling it for something.... Bigger.
enter the 1st generation VW Touareg. a Big, German, overly-complex SUV. This right now is my parents top choice for a replacement vehicle for the GLI. My question is would one of these, specced out with a V8 and no air suspension, be something that can be reliably daily driven for 6-8 months with no major breakdowns to be expected?
Most of the ones we’re looking at are around $10-12K, and we’d trade it in next summer on something else when I graduate high school.
so, what does oppo think of the OG Touareg?

Why the interest in getting an SUV you don’t need? It might snow once if at all this winter. And why double the cylinders for a high schooler? And why shop for something that is unreliable even by VW standards?

The tow-rag isn’t very reliable. Might I interest you in this lovely ML?

Please don’t tell me that you got in a small crash and now need a full-size SUV.
And to answer your question, no, the Touareg is not going to be very reliable.

if it were my choice I would be looking at 1 '93 SC400, and saving my money, but my mom wants me in a big SUV. she likes the touareg, so that's the reasoning behind it

I love the idea of that generation Toureg with the V10 diesel.
The reality, not so much.
Basically...Lolz, no.

not one crash. I’ve been rear ended, and then within 35 days, I had a guy not yield, which has probably totaled my car (see: my GLI update posts) so my mom's scared about my safety now, and wants me in something the size of rhode island

I know they’re not the most reliable things in the word (read: my cousins have an older cayenne turbo. I know how bad VAG SUV’s can be.) all I’m asking is how bad can one be for 6-7 months?

Take this from someone who drives something bigger than a Touareg. You really don’t need something that big unless you haul tons of stuff... It’ll just be a waste of space and gas. Do you want to drive something bigger or do you want to have something that is fun like the GLI?
In my opinion if you will only have this replacement for 6-8 months, why don’t you just keep the GLI if it can be fixed.

Is it her way of keeping you safe because you had two boops this year? Obviously the GLI protected you just fine...

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.
Ahem, sorry. Knee-jerk reaction to Mk1 Touaregs. Please, don’t do it. They are bad for your health.

Wow. I was about 1.5 inches form becoming one with a Rav4’s grille and yet my parents were going to let me get another Miata if I wanted. I wish I still had pictures of the point of impact, because the front right of the Rav4 hit the leading edge of the door. I was probably only a quarter of an inch or so from losing my left leg.
Just point out to her that you are neither dead nor seriously injured, so the GLI was obviously safe. The best thing to do to not end up in a 15-passenger van is to wait a few months before you actually make a decision.

At this point any resale value in the GLI is gone. Driving it for only like 6 more months isn’t going to make it lose any more value. Buying a whole new car to drive around briefly is just a dumb idea. 6 months in the gli if they fix it makes a lot more sense

I love it, but as to whether it can last 8-12 months...maybe.

This makes no sense.
Take a (likely) huge hit on selling a twice-wrecked car
And buy an SUV that gets half the fuel mileage, no warranty, and is extremely unreliable

Basically... My mom’s gonna SUV crazy since we bought the touareg. She wants one too...
And now apparently she’s putting me in one. We’ll see what happens

yeah. the idea was to trade in the GLI at the end of my high schooling and get something a bit sprightlier (specifically, a used or CPO C63 AMG) but since the GLI has been hit twice, my parents are worried it’s A) totaled (we find out tomorrow) or B) going to have the worst resale value ever. They want me to sell it, and since I’m 17, I kinda don’t have a choice.
The idea is to buy a replacement vehicle, and when I get to college (and if I get in to the right school) i'll be getting my dream car

See, my parents aren't like that. they want me to be as safe as possible (at least my mom does)
i’ll try talking her into keeping the GLI until the summer when I go car shopping for what I truly want.

Not that it’s the manliest of cars, but have you considered an 08-09 V6 Rav4? The sport model isn’t very chickish. The size is good, the power is very good and the reliability is even better. Plus when it comes time to sell, it will.
270 hp pushing 3700 pounds for the Rav4 and 310 hp pushing 5300 for the Toureg.
The Rav4 has 108 cu. ft of interior versus 100 for the VW.
26 mpg hwy vs 18 hwy.
I mean I get that you guys like VW, but I just feel like you get more for your money, it won’t cost much to run, it’s ridiculously reliable and when it comes time to sell people buy them. It feels like for everything you are putting out there as needs/wants, this ticks the boxes.

My grandfather, who lives in Europe, has one in unicorn spec (V6 TDI, 6 speed manual, navigation, and cloth seats). If your makes makes you get a big SUV, the Touareg is probably your best option. It's extremely smooth and not too bad in the twisties. Plus, tons of hatch space. As far as I know, he hasn't had any reliability issues either.

Did someone say early 2000’s relatively unreliable German SUV? Fear not, Petar. I have a solution. The first Generation X5 was an excellent car especially in the 3.0i guise with the Xenons and the manual gearbox.

No one’s forcing you to get a V8. The 3.2 I6 gets you to the same places at the same time. Jeez.
